There are two types of striated muscle, red muscle and white muscle, which are inter convertible. The frequency of nervous stimulation of a striated muscle determines whether the muscle exists in its red or white permutation. Although these two types are inter convertible, each possesses entirely different properties. Red muscle, with its rich supply of blood, mitochondria, and myoglobin, oxidizes fatty acids as its energy source. Red muscle contracts slowly and, thus, can carry out long-term activities without appreciable fatigue. White muscle, with its less rich supply of blood, mitochondria, and myoglobin, anaerobically breaks down glycogen as its energy source. White muscle can contract rapidly but only for short periods as its tires quickly.
